Patients in Clinical Trials Are Key to Finding New Cures

In 1993, Texas Oncology formed its statewide clinical research network, which has been responsible for medical breakthroughs like the anti-nausea medication ondansetron, as well as TC, the most widely-used chemotherapy regimen for breast cancer in the world.

“Texas Oncology has been instrumental in testing a number of groundbreaking new therapies, and none of it would be possible without the help of thousands of brave patients participating in these trials,” said Stephen Jones, M.D., Texas Oncology medical oncologist and lead physician on the TC study.

“Our patients are true heroes on the frontlines of cancer research.”

Christina Currie

November 2011 - Clinical Trials - Christina CurrieChristina Currie was still in the hospital after the birth of her second child when she asked her doctor about a lump on her breast. It was soon diagnosed as stage IV metastatic breast cancer. An initial CT scan showed that the cancer had also spread to her liver.

“I knew that I had to do everything I could to fight, so I could be there to see my children grow up,” said Christina. “When my doctor at Texas Oncology told me about a clinical trial that could help me, I signed up immediately.”

A year later, Christina is in remission, and her last set of CT scans came back clear, just in time to celebrate her son’s first birthday.

Donald Turner

November 2011 - Clinical Trials - Donald TurnerAmarillo resident Donald Turner was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in December 2007, and his Texas Oncology physician was honest with him that even with treatment, it was likely that he would not live longer than two years.

“When my doctor told me that I qualified for a trial testing a new combination of chemotherapy drugs, I was eager to participate because I hoped the study would help others,” said Donald.

Now, three and a half years later, Donald and his wife Theresa are celebrating the success of the clinical trial, which shrank his tumor and has allowed him to return to his normal life.
